More than ever we live in a time of uncertainty. The Soul of Uncertainty explores our relationship to uncertainty. Do we approach it with fear and apprehension, or containing the seeds of adventure, excitement and wonder?
In the manner of The Alchemist, The Soul of Uncertainty is an inspiring fable that shows the human experience of life in all its ups and downs, forgetting’s and remembering’s, on a journey of spiritual adventure.
A young man, Buddy, just setting out in life encounters a mysterious ‘modern day mystic’, Mervin, who promises to help him tap into magical powers inside himself to attain a sense of inner freedom, joy, deep intimacy, and his soul’s purpose.
As Buddy encounters situations and people along the way, he leans on the powerful tools and lessons Mervin continues to teach him, including the Magical Playground, the Rainbow Effect and the Movie of Your Life.
Buddy’s is initiated into the mysteries of love and romance, becomes a father, and discovers what he thinks is his life’s work.
Finally, after suffering a tremendous loss, Buddy is surprised when Mervin meets him once more, this time with a journal retrieved from a shaman in Peru. It is in this meeting when Mervin passes the torch to Buddy with instructions to share its message with others. It is in sharing the work that Buddy discovers his soul’s purpose.
“... a tale of a wanderer’s inner awakenings ... thanks to the author’s easy, inviting prose, readers should find themselves rewarded.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS
“A revelation! A wake-up call! Most all of us are looking for deeper meaning. The Soul of Uncertainty lifts up the human spirit and becomes your guide on an empowering journey of self-discovery.” —TEMPLE HAYES, Difference-maker, International Speaker, Author, When Did You Die? .

I find myself already using a lot of the the lessons learned from the character Mervin in this book on a day to day basis! The Soul of Uncertainty A Fable for Our Times edition by Mark Susnow Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Using a fable as the vehicle for 'The Soul of Uncertainty, A Fable for Our Times', sets Mark Susnow apart from the many biographical accounts that are so prominent today. Mark skillfully blends the explorations, travels, events and mentors of his life into a tightly packed tale of a life journey.
Leaving home in his teens, Buddy soon encounters the guides and challengers who will help him move through the uncertainty that underpins his life. These teachers are not always with him but do appear at appropriate times, usually in a very playful way. The guides never force Buddy to follow their tenets, they simply show him a higher vibration, if you will, and offer him the opportunity to match it or not. He soon (and regularly) learns that coming up to their level causes some of his old ‘baggage’—beliefs, fears, dreams, facts, societal and family programming—to come to the forefront. Buddy must either work through and release them or lose momentum and slip backwards.
He learns over and over that this is a seesaw process. His music sustains him and, once mastered, his meditation practice grounds him. Over time, Buddy learns to stay close to those whose enthusiasm buoys him and to release those whose doubts and negativity drag him down.
The Soul of Uncertainly is not a quick read. As Buddy is challenged to go within, the reader may do the same. Buddy’s journey may compel you to explore the underpinnings of your own uncertainty and to explore some of the same avenues. And to give serious consideration to your circle of friends and family and the relationships you have with each.
If the author were to revise the book at some point, I believe it would add value to connect the sequences just a little bit better. For example, Buddy’s dog, such a solace in the first adventures, seems to disappear! At other times, a few sentences would help to make some transitions a little easier to follow.
In the prologue, a conversation between a grandfather and grandson sums up very well the value of the book
“Let me tell you a story.”
“Will it have a happy ending?”
“That’s up to you.”
Now that I have had a chance to sit back and reflect on Mark Susnow’s fine coming of age story, I think he got the title right for this novel of a young man growing from boyhood to maturity. Buddy is our hero and he is uncertain from beginning to end of his story about final answers to the perplexing problems of life. His mantra is “It is what it is.” Deal with it now, in this present moment, the only time any of us will ever have.
Buddy is all caught up in what Langston Hughes calls “the sweet flypaper of life.” He gets stuck in some bad situations and problems, but always at key moments in his life a friend or mentor shows up to free him, for the time being. Buddy learns that the wheel of life is always turning and change from good to bad and back to good again is what life is all about. As he matures into manhood and his life’s work, he understands that bad times are certain to happen, but for him problems are opportunities for growth and development.
Buddy becomes an environmental lawyer out in California and finds meaning and purpose in his work. Unfortunately, one of the partner’s in his firm, a man Buddy trusted and respected, was a crook who put the firm into bankruptcy. For a time Buddy thought he might be headed for jail but he was fortunate to escape prosecution for the partner’s misdeeds. This corporate disaster was a turning point for Buddy, who now questioned whether the law was really his life’s work. He decided to leave the law and become a “life coach.” He wanted to share all that he had learned about life and living with anyone interested in his story and his philosophy of life.
What makes The Soul of Uncertainty different from the many famous coming of age stories from David Copperfield and Huckleberry Finn to The Catcher in the Rye is that Buddy talks to us, his readers and asks us questions like “What if you could wake up every morning excited about beginning your day.” Buddy wants to help us find an answer to this important question. Just a little later he says that “There is another tendency we have that derails us…. We beat ourselves up projecting into the future a dark scenario….” Buddy wants to help us learn to be centered in the present and let the future take care of itself.
Author Mark Susnow tells us on page two of his novel that “All characters in this book are fictitious. Any resemblance to actual persons living or dead is purely coincidental.” Few people reading Buddy’s story are likely to believe that much of Mark’s life and the people he has met are not grist for his mill. But whether the events in Buddy’s story have some foundation in fact won’t matter to most of us. We are “on the road” with Buddy taking his “road less traveled.” His is the narrow path that leads to life, the examined life lived in the light. Buddy wants us to see him warts and all and to know that none of us is perfect, but that is not an excuse for carelessness and indifference, but a challenge to become our better selves. Most people reading Mark’s book are going to want to accept this challenge and that is exactly what Mark wants.
The story makes us look into our own journey. From early childhood and family, through leaving home to find ourselves, then into the adult challenges we each face and must come to accept - the story is strong and pulls you into its inner insights and questions. Some of the early San Francisco experience and Big Sur and other locations we can identify with.
Here is the book that knocks on your door about making a life worth living even though you have been living a life that has brought you where you are and that ain't so hot. You are not alone and with great writing, the author talks about cleaning up your act. This is a book to read to get you there.
